Nothing ruins the look of hardwood floors faster than a network of scratches from furniture legs. The good news is that preventing them is simple and inexpensive.

1. Felt Furniture Pads

The most popular solution. Adhesive-backed felt pads stick to the bottom of furniture legs and let chairs slide smoothly. Replace them every 6-12 months as they wear down.

2. Furniture Sliders

For heavy pieces that need to be moved frequently, hard plastic sliders with a smooth bottom are ideal. They let you slide furniture without lifting, protecting both your floor and your back.

3. Silicone Chair Leg Caps

These slip over the bottom of chair legs and provide a soft, non-slip surface. They are nearly invisible and work well on dining chairs that get moved often.

4. Caster Cups

For furniture with wheels or casters, caster cups hold the wheel in place and distribute weight over a wider area. They prevent rolling and floor indentation.

5. Rubber Furniture Grippers

These go under furniture legs and provide grip plus protection. They are especially useful on tile floors where furniture tends to slide.

Whichever method you choose, the key is to protect every furniture leg that touches the floor. A few dollars in pads can save thousands in floor refinishing.
